Day One: Mechanical Elements of BioDiesel Production

Block 1: Making Biodiesel; the Gee Whiz Reaction (Library)
Hands on production of 1 liter of biodiesel in lab. The very first thing done in this

Course, even before introductions, is to actually make some biodiesel in the

same, but scaled down, manner that you will use to make production biodiesel.

Block 2: Course Orientation (Library)
Introduction of Staff and Participants. Description of Facilities and local

Amenities. Overview of Syllabus and course content. General questions

               answered.

Block 3: Starting a Reaction, Make Methoxide (Bee Hive)
Hands on transfer of 100 gallons of wvo from Settler to Reactor. Start Reactor.

              Prepare Sodium Methoxide solution.

Block 4: Gross Filtration of wvo (Bee Hive)
Hands on Gross Filtration of 100 gallons of wvo from collection state to Settler.

              Discussion of qualities of wvo.

Block 5: The Chemistry of BioDiesel (Library), Addition of Methoxide (Bee Hive)
Description of the molecular chemistry of biodiesel. Topics include: chemical

structure of triglycerides, methanol, sodium hydroxide, sodium methoxide and

chemical processes of: esterification, transesterification, saponification,

methoxide suspension.  Add sodium methoxide to Reactor.

Block 0: Lunch
Simple, wholesome food will be available on site at no charge. Multiple

restaurants and cafes are within walking distance as well.

Block 6: Hour One Sample (Bee Hive); Titration Chemistry (Library)
Take Hour One sample from Bee Hive and discuss attributes.
Hands on titration of wvo samples. Instruction in technique, equipment, and
              analysis of results.

Block 7: Hour Two Sample (Bee Hive); Mechanical Requirements of Reactor

              (Library)
Take Hour Two sample from Bee Hive and discuss attributes.
Discuss generic requirements for building a biodiesel production system.

Block 8: Hour Three Sample (Bee Hive), Distinctive Attributes of Bee Hive Reactor
              (Library), Final Sample (Bee Hive)
Take Hour Three Sample from Bee Hive and discuss attributes.
Discuss specific distinctive features of Bee Hive Reactor System.
Take Final Sample from Bee Hive and discuss attributes.
Close of Business for Day One
